The median household income in Olive Hill is $49,688 – lower than the statewide figure of $55,573, but higher than is generally found in the surrounding rural parts of Carter County, where the town is located.

‘If you’re in a small town that hasn’t seen new retail in a long time, you see new development, a new yellow sign, there’s something intangible and positive about having that new development,’ he told DailyMail.com in a phone interview.

Merrett, the Western Illinois University academic, agreed that in some cases, a new dollar store can be a boon to rural areas where local businesses have shuttered, and residents have few or no retail options.

However, Wells, the newspaper editor, noted that the proliferation of dollar stores in Olive Hill has coincided with a local ordinance passed several years ago allowing the sale of alcohol within the city limits.
