That said, there’s a clear line between normal settling-in behaviour and something that needs attention. Prolonged refusal to eat beyond what’s typical for the species, laboured breathing, unusual discharge, obvious injury, or any behaviour that seems more than ordinarily distressed are reasons to contact a vet experienced with reptiles straightaway, rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.

For a new keeper, the practical takeaway is that the terminology matters far less than what the enclosure actually needs to do for the species inside it. A product listed as a vivarium and one listed as a terrarium might be functionally identical, or they might differ significantly in ventilation, material and intended use. What matters is checking the specification, the dimensions and the ventilation against what a given species actually requires, rather than assuming the label tells the full story.

A quiet room, away from heavy foot traffic, loud noise or other pets, helps the settling-in process considerably. Some reduced appetite or reduced activity in the first day or two is common and not automatically a concern, since travel and a new environment are stressful events for any animal.

Ventilation is where a lot of wooden vivariums are quietly let down. Front ventilation panels, usually built into the door frame, allow airflow without letting heat and humidity escape too quickly, which matters more for species that need stable humidity than it does for very dry-adapted ones. Checking where the ventilation sits, and how much of it there is, tells you a good deal about which species a given vivarium was designed around.

The rule of thumb worth keeping in mind is straightforward. If in doubt about husbandry, a care sheet and, where needed, a conversation with staff who handle these species day to day is the right first step. If in doubt about the animal’s health, whether that’s appetite, behaviour, weight, skin or anything else, the right step is a vet with genuine Reptile Centre experience, not a general practice unfamiliar with exotics, and not a forum thread.
