Most reptile substrates are sold as general-purpose products, suitable in theory for a wide range of species with only minor adjustments. The ProRep Beardie Life range takes a different approach, building a substrate and accessory system around a single species, the bearded dragon, rather than adapting a generic mix to fit.

Northampton Reptile Centre’s starter kits list their contents clearly both in-store and online, and staff can talk through what a specific kit does and doesn’t cover for a given species before it’s bought, including what to add alongside it. Buying a kit is a perfectly sound way to start, provided the list is actually read rather than assumed, and any gap between what’s included and what the species needs is filled before the animal comes home.

Choosing a species this way, with the long view in mind rather than the first few weeks, tends to make for a better outcome for both keeper and animal.

The rule of thumb worth keeping in mind is straightforward. If in doubt about husbandry, a care sheet and, where needed, a conversation with staff who handle these species day to day is the right first step. If in doubt about the animal’s health, whether that’s appetite, behaviour, weight, skin or anything else, the right step is a vet with genuine reptile experience, not a general practice unfamiliar with exotics, and not a forum thread.

The structure is fairly simple in practice. A subscription is set up around a delivery cadence, typically weekly or fortnightly, chosen to match how quickly a particular animal or collection gets through its livefood. Each delivery contains a set quantity of feeder insects, sized appropriately to the animal being fed, whether that’s smaller insects for a juvenile or hatchling, or larger prey for an adult with a bigger appetite. The livefood itself is despatched to arrive live and in good condition, with appropriate packaging for the time of year and the journey involved.
