Strictly speaking, a terrarium originally referred to a planted enclosure built around live vegetation, closer to a small indoor garden than a housing unit for an animal. A vivarium, by contrast, technically refers to any enclosure built to house a living creature, whether that’s a reptile enclosure setup, amphibian or invertebrate, with or without live planting. In practice, though, UK retailers and keepers use both terms fairly loosely, often depending on regional habit or supplier naming rather than any strict definition.

Minimal handling is the starting point. However tempting it is to interact with a new arrival straight away, most reptiles settle better with little or no handling for the first few days, left instead to move around the enclosure and find its hides and basking spots in their own time. Handling can begin gradually once the animal is feeding normally and showing settled behaviour, rather than on a fixed schedule regardless of how the animal is actually responding.
