The UGC has established basic standards of teaching for the award of degrees to students for courses taught through distance mode at the UG and PG levels through the UGC ODL regulations. Project-based learning prepares students for their professional careers by learning from instructors who have vast practical knowledge in specific areas. Online education as it exists today is purely supplemental to primary traditional education and does not replace the latter completely.

Online education was pioneered by universities that provided course material to students who couldn’t attend campuses. IIT Madras The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, a national research institute, has just launched an online learning platform. A Diploma in Data Science, a Diploma in Programming, and a BSc Degree in Programming and Data Science are among the UGC-approved online courses.

The Institute is known for its contributions to basic and applied research, technical education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial consulting. It is envisaged that many more IITs would participate in this online course program.
