Care Sheets as a Starting Point, Not a Substitute for a Vet

Care sheets are one of the most useful tools available to a reptile keeper, setting out the basics of temperature, humidity, diet and enclosure size for a given species in one place. Northampton Reptile Centre publishes care sheets covering species including the Hermann’s tortoise, leopard gecko, corn snake and White’s tree frog, and they’re a sensible starting point for anyone researching a species or double-checking their current setup.

That said, there’s a clear line between normal settling-in behaviour and something that needs attention. Prolonged refusal to eat beyond what’s typical for the species, laboured breathing, unusual discharge, obvious injury, or any behaviour that seems more than ordinarily distressed are reasons to contact a vet experienced with reptiles straightaway, rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.

Minimal handling is the starting point. However tempting it is to interact with a new arrival straight away, most reptiles settle better with little or no handling for the first few days, left instead to move around the enclosure and find its hides and basking spots in their own time. Handling can begin gradually once the animal is feeding normally and showing settled behaviour, rather than on a fixed schedule regardless of how the animal is actually responding.

That said, a species-specific system isn’t automatically the right choice for every setup. Keepers with more than one species, or those who prefer to build a bioactive enclosure from individual components, may still find a generic substrate combined with careful research suits them better.
